Pick a Card, Any Card

Category: Card Trick

Supplies: Deck of cards

Summary: Someone picks a card out of the deck, memorises it, shows everyone apart from you, and returns it to the deck. The deck is mixed. Amazingly, you find their card.

Secret: Remember another card in the deck which magicians call the Key Card and place your spectator’s  Card next to it. In order to find the spectator’s Chosen Card you must know where the KeyCard is.

Set up: Ask a person to pick any card and show everyone apart from you. Tell them you can feel which card it is after they cut the deck a couple times.

Method:

Step One: Choose a card to memorize and put it at the bottom of the deck. We will use the Ace of Spades as an example.

Step Two: Ask your spectator to pick a card. Let’s say they choose the 5 of spades. Turn around so you don’t see the card they chose.

Step Three: Have them show anyone else that is around, so that they can’t try to say they chose another card.

Step Four: Cut the deck in half then have the spectator return the card they chose to the top of the deck.

Complete the cut by placing your bottom card (Ace of spades) on top of the spectators chosen card.

Step Five: Key Card is now on top of the 5 of spades. You may now have the spectator cut the deck a few times. Your memorized card will remain next to the spectator’s card.

Important: Don’t shuffle the deck because the Key Card and Chosen Card might get separated.

Step Six: Now spread out the cards flat on a table or in your hands.

Step Seven: Find your key card, The card Under it will be the spectator’s card, the 5 of spades.

Ask the spectator if they see their card – Look away and tell the spectator you are looking away because you don’t want to see what they are looking at.

Step Eight: Cut the spectator’s card to the top of the deck. Ask them the name of the card they chose. Turn over the top card and there it is!

Thick piece of Cardboard

Summary: You will have a spectator count coins in a dish. Pour the coins into the spectators hand. When the spectator counts the coins in their hand later, the spectator will find more coins in their hand than they originally counted.

Secret: There is a secret compartment you created with the coins in it below the dish. When you pour the coins into the spectators hand, the coins in the secret compartment will be added to the counted coins in the top.

Set up: Cut 2 pieces of the thick cardboard

1: Cut a Rectangular Piece about 3 inches by 4 inches. Just make sure its not bigger that the plate.

2: Cut a similar sized piece on the shorter 3 inches side. Cut a rectangular piece out that will allow you to fit the coins in.

Glue the cardboard grooved piece to the bottom of the plate. Make sure the end with the groove is close to the side or an inch or so away from the edge of the plate.

Glue the other piece of cardboard over the cardboard with the groove.

You have created a secret chamber for the extra coins.

Method:

Step One: Create the contraption in the Setup above.

Step Two: Out of view before the trick is performed,
slide the coins into the secret area.

Step Three: Now, place some coins on top of the dish and have the spectator count them.

Step Four: Start pouring the coins out of the end the dish that the groove is angled towards. The coins from the secret groove chamber and the top of the dish will fall into the spectators hand together.

Step Five: After you pour them into the spectators hand move the dish away. Get the dish completely out of sight.

Make some really thick salty water. soak a piece of thread in it for 60 minutes. take it out and let it dry. Ask someone for a ring. Tie it to the end of the thread. Hold the string so its like a pendulum. Now take a match and light the string down by the ring. The string will burn but the salt crystals can hold up a fairly light ring. An awesome effect.

Touch your thumb to your middle finger as if you are picking up the coin as it reaches the edge of the table. Keeping all your fingers closed still. Stare at where the coin should be as you slowly move your hand away from you back to about 6 inches above where the coin originally was. 3 core magic tips

Patter – This is the most important piece of your routine when performing magic. You can take a simple trick and turn it into a whole theatrical event if you can come up with the right dialogue to assist you. Now this is hard to teach but there are some common rules you should follow. One is to always look into their eyes.  Make sure you have their attention and they are listening to your every word.  Second is humor.  Humor is what gets people in a relaxed state and sets them up to be caught off guard as to what you are about to do.

After Effect – Once you have performed your magic trick and your spectator is freaking out as to what they have just witnessed, do not say anything to them.  Just stay quiet for a minute and just stare at them. You just let them talk and they will build up what just happened even more just by themselves. Try it yourself.

Confidence – You have to go in knowing that you are going to pull off one of the biggest magic tricks ever. You can’t be going in all nerves, it will show and take away from the trick and the spectator will suspect something right from the start. Practice until you can do it blind folded. You need to come across as you truly are magical and have no doubt that in your mind that you can show someone something truly amazing. Your spectators will feed off this energy and will give you more respect for it.

5 rules of magic

There 5 basic rules of magic. Break one of them and you have ruined the magical mystery of the effect and lost the credibility and respect of the audience.

1. Don’t EVER tell the secret.

Most people will ask how you do a trick. Just say “I never tell my secrets” Don’t be temped to tell them as once you do the mystery is lost and so is the power of the trick.

2. Only perform magic in the perfect situations.

Ideally, you should only perform when asked, but if they have never seen any magic before, test the audience out with one trick. Don’t ever assault someone with trick after trick.

3. Leave them wanting more.

Part of the fun in magic lies in the audience wanting more. So don’t overstay your welcome and start to bore someone. Some people like magic more than others, so you will have to experiment with this.

4. Learning one trick very well is better than learning 100 tricks badly.

The memory of one well performed trick will stick in the memories much better than lots of mediocre tricks. Expand your knowledge by learning many tricks, but focus on only a handful to really perfect.

5. Practice to absolute perfection.

Don’t ever perform a trick you don’t know perfectly. This will take hours, days, weeks and sometimes months to get right.
